Men and Church?
If you're a man living in Robroyston then there's more than a slight chance that attending church isn't high up your list of priorities when it comes to finding something to do on a Sunday morning. If this describes you then you're not alone. The Church in the UK is haemorrhaging men. A recent report from Tearfund shows that the proportion of men in British churches is only 35 percent – which means that nearly two in every three churchgoers are women! The reasons for this are many, but our leadership is working hard to ensure that Robroyston Church bucks this trend by being a place that men want to come – where you are welcomed, challenged and actively involved at an appropriate level. Church should never offend our masculinity!

We started by doing some stuff exclusively for men – but it's no longer just about socialising! Every month we meet for a couple of hours on a Saturday and get stuck into the jobs that need done in and around the church building. Not only is it proving to be incredibly productive, it's actually a good laugh too – the banter is epic!
Having said that, an equally important part of what we do as guys is socialise. In January we met for a "curry-in" at the church building which was set-up very much like our youth drop-in! We were able to relax as well as engage in some light-hearted competition over the table tennis table and x-box kinect before eating some fantastic curry. The night concluded with a short epilogue from our guest speaker, Terry McCutcheon. Next up is ten-pin bowling! There's no agenda to these events other than getting to know each other and having a good time – and everyone's welcome!

If our work parties and social events aren't your thing then why not come along to an overnight retreat. Our first retreat took place in February 2011 at a cottage on the shores of the pituresque Loch Fyne and was attended by a few men from the church and community. Friday night was all about eating and chilling out – always good! On Saturday there were two discussion-based teaching sessions looking at what it means to be a man in contemporary society. There was also time to fit in lunch and some healthy competition in the form of target shooting before heading home.
Details of our next retreat will be published on our events page. |

Isn't it frustrating when you have to listen to someone talk about Christianity? Why do they seem to avoid the questions you want answered? Is the Bible relevant in today's world or a relic of a bygone era? If there is a God why does he allow suffering?
SOUL is your chance to get your questions answered. The next SOUL course will run on Sunday evenings for seven weeks from 15th January. Each night will begin with a meal that is followed by a short video presentation and the chance to chat in groups. |
